Writing

Handwriting: This week we are going to practise another 6 letters of the alphabet that are all formed in a similar way.  We are going to concentrate on the letters i,l,t,j,u and y.  If you go to our main class pages you will find videos of Mrs Thexton modelling each letter; both with her right hand and left hand. I have also attached a video link below to see how to write the letters.  Try and practise these letters every day and apply this in other writing.

 

Spellings: I hope you have all managed to move onto some or all of your next list ok.  When practising your spellings, don't forget to use your cursive writing.

Thursday 

 

  • With a grown up, read the Hamilton story The Mouse, the Frog and the Little Red Hen.
  • Use all your Key Reading Strategies, (In the resources pack below) to read aloud new and tricky words.
  • On a piece of paper, draw or paint a picture of either the Frog, the Mouse of the Little Red Hen.
  • Add words and descriptive phrases to your drawing to describe your animal’s appearance and its personality in the story (what it is like).

Challenge: Do you feel sorry for the Little Red Hen? Write a full, punctuated sentence on lined paper explaining what you feel.

Wednesday:

 

Today we are comparing stories.  Traditional tales often have differences - we noticed that with the two different endings for our Chicken Licken story.  I thought it was odd that all the characters had rhyming names but only Henny Penny's last name began with a, 'P'.  All the others started with an, 'L'. How strange!

 

 

  • Watch the different version of the Chicken Licken story. - see below for link.
  • With a grown up, read Comparing Chicken Licken Stories.  Choose one answer in each category and ask a grown-up to record this for you. (Resources Day 3)
  • Now read the Chicken Licken Questions. Verbally explain your answer to each question to a grown-up or older sibling.
  • On lined paper, write a sentence saying which version of Chicken Licken you preferred – the oral story or the Hamilton tale. Write another sentence with the word because in it saying why you liked your choice best. Remember to use your best handwriting, punctuation and word spacing.

 

Tuesday:

 

  • Read aloud each of the Pronouns from Chicken Licken (It should now be correct in the resources below) Use a ‘look, cover, write, check’ method to practise spelling each one on lined paper.
  • Say out loud a sentence using the first pronoun, he. Say a sentence using the second pronoun, she.  Keep going, saying a sentence for each pronoun.
  • Pick your favourite of your sentences. Write your sentence in your best handwriting on lined paper. Remember to use cursive handwriting, a capital letter, full stop and to leave neat spaces between your words.

Challenge: Repeat for other sentences you created.

Monday:

 

I have retold the story of Chicken Licken for you to watch and listen to.  The text is in the resources so you may like a grownup at home to read it to you or you can try and follow along with me.

 

  • Do the same as me – on a large piece of paper, draw a several pictures showing what happened in the story of Chicken Licken.
  • Label your drawings with animals’ names and other descriptive words/phrases.
  • Use your set of pictures to help you tell the story of Chicken Licken to someone in your family.

Challenge: Ask if you could tell the story to a relative who lives far away by making a phone or video call.

Thursday 14th January

 

  • Pick a third character from This is the House that Jack Built.
  • On lined paper, start writing a sentence saying what happens to your character in the story.
  • Use the word because to say why that happens or why the character behaves in the way they do.

Example: The grumpy judge wakes up in the morning because the huge rooster starts crowing.

  • Use the Because spelling aid to make sure you spell the word correctly.
  • Check that you have punctuated your sentence properly.
  • Rub out your full stop and carry on your sentence using and: The grumpy judge wakes up in the morning because the huge rooster starts crowing and making lots of noise.

Challenge: Repeat the whole thing for another character.

 

Wednesday 13th January

  • Pick another of the Characters from the Story. (resources below)
  • On lined paper, start writing a descriptive sentence about the character, beginning This is the...
  • Use the word and to add a second clause to your sentence, saying what they do in the story or what they are like.

Example: This is the crafty little rat and he eats Jack’s stinky yellow cheese.

  • Remember your capital letter, full stop and neat word spaces.
  • If you have time, imagine that YOU are the rat. Write a sentence using and to describe two things you would do to escape from the cat: I would... and... .

 

Tuesday 12th January

 

 

  • Listen again to This is the House that Jack Built. Join in with the reading as much as you can. 
  • Pick one of the Characters from the Story.
  • On lined paper, write a sentence saying what your character looks like.
  • Use really good describing words.
  • Use a capital letter and a full stop for your sentence.
  • Leave neat, regular spaces between your words.
  • Carry on and write a further descriptive sentence about your character.

 

My sentence is about the Tatty man:  The man has a long, tattered coat all covered in bright patches.

Monday 11th January

Last week we learned two different traditional tales.  Today you will decide which is your favourite and why.  I wonder if you have a favourite traditional tale.

 

  • Think about Dragon Dinosaur, This is the House that Jack Built and any other traditional stories you know.
  • On lined paper, write a sentence saying which is your favourite of these stories. Why do you like that one best?
  • Remember to use your best handwriting and the correct punctuation.
  • Write another sentence using because to say why you like it the best.

Challenge: Think about all the traditional stories you know. Write a list of things that often feature in traditional stories (e.g. talking animals, adventures, scary things, etc.)
