Currently our phonics sessions are focused on spelling. It is very difficult for children to remember which spelling of a sound is used for each word. For instance, if they are trying to spell the word 'feast'....is it feest, fest, fiest?
In some cases, there is a 'best bet' - but not always. It is vital that the children get lots and lots of opportunities to group the words by spelling. Gradually they will begin to remember which spelling goes with which word. Please spend about 15 mins on these games each day. Remember, it is your child who should be doing the writing.
The week follows a pattern of games. It would be useful to watch the short How To.. videos the first time you play the game, in order to get the most out of it. Happy spelling!
Look at these three words. What sound are the red letters making?
church kitchen mixture
Yes! They all make a ch sound. This sound can be very difficult to try to spell.
Write these three words across the top of your paper. Then have a good look at the words below.
Carefully write them in three columns, sorting them by the way the 'ch' sound is made.
match cheese church crunch catch picture witch cheeky watch
Did you notice that the tch spelling is often when the ch sound comes straight after a short vowel? Here are some common exceptions though: much, such, which, rich.
Can you put those last four words into the right column? Spelling isn't easy is it?!

Please do the spelling test. The spellings to be tested are: eat, stream, dream, see, sea, teeth, people
New spellings for next week are: slice, quite, spite, shine, kind, behind plus if possible the tricky words particular to your child (on the letter I emailed). Please discuss these new words and make sure your child can read and understand them prior to learning to spell them.
Good luck everyone!
