I would like to say a massive thank you to all the parents, grand parents, friends etc for supporting our cake sale, which will go towards the year 6 end of school trip.  It was a huge success and that would not have been possible without your help - it was very much appreciated!

We enjoyed a much deserved treat on Friday.  Mr Holt and Mr Oldroyd came into school to deliver a 'Sports Festival' to Austria class!  Well, it was brilliant!  It was fantastic to see all children joining in and thoroughly enjoying sport in such a collaborative/cross-curricular way.  Please take a look at all of the pictures below - I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I did.

Next week you will sit your SATs test for maths, reading, grammar, punctuation and spelling.  I know how hard you have worked to prepare for these tests and I am really proud of all the progress you have made!  It has been a pleasure to teach each and everyone one of you.  So as discussed on Friday, your homework is to relax, do something you love, get some fresh air, eat and sleep well.  I know some of you will want to do some revision but make sure it is not too much as you need to be fresh for next week.  Come to school on Monday ready to do your best!

Good luck and best wishes,

Miss Stones

Welcome back - I hope you had a fantastic half term!

I would like to say a massive thank you for all your hard work, enthusiasm and fabulous effort during your half term Austria project.  They were super and we all enjoyed hearing all about them.  Take a look at the pictures below.

This week we have been busy exploring how we can make our writing more exciting by describing a character's feeling through their actions.  For example, if they are scared, don't tell the audience that straight away.  You could say their heart started beating faster, the hairs on the back of their neck stood on end, sweat starting dripping from their forehead etc.  It builds up suspense much more effectively.  We used drama to explore different emotions.

In maths, we have been calculating the area and perimeter of polygons and compound shapes and in science we have been understanding how periscopes work.

Awesome Austria

Week Commencing 5/2/18

Wow!  We have had a fabulous last week of half term - we have been very busy!!

We had a fantastic day at the Bradford Science and Media museum!  The children took part in an interactive workshop all about light and how we see things, before experiencing what life in space is really like during the iMax3D virtual tour.  It was then on to the Wonderlab where we could try out lots of science experiments and listen to and take part some very interesting demonstrations.

Week Commencing 29/2/18

In literacy, we have been using our literal and inference skills to write character descriptions, particularly thinking about how bodies react when they are feeling a specific emotion. For example, if a person is nervous they may start to shake and their hands may begin to sweat. We have also been writing some exciting space stories to grab the readers' attention. Ask your children what they included in their stories to tick of their writing targets

We have used lots of practical methods to explore and investigate angles in maths! The children had to create their own success criteria and rules for angles. Ask your children what they found out.

In science, we have been identifying the different parts of the eye and how they work.  Ask you children if they can tell you what the different parts of the eye are in the diagram below and explain how we see.

Week Commencing 22/1/18

Also, we have been concentrating on changing the tone of our writing depending on the purpose of the audience.  Ask your children if they can tell you the features of writing a formal letter of complaint.  In addition to this, we have been using the text to predict, question and summarise.

We have had a really big push this week on using ambitious vocabulary.  Each week I will post some of the fabulous words we have used during our writing.

In maths, we have consolidated our work on percentages and been calculating the mean of a set of data.  We made sure that we followed the steps to success and we showed detailed working out.

Week Commencing 20/11/17

We have had another enjoyable week!  We are getting really excited about our Christmas play - all the songs and drama are coming together nicely.  Thank you for all your support with learning the lines!

In literacy, we have been learning all about slavery during the Ancient Greek times.  We were quite shocked about some of the things they would have been expected to.  To get into character, we used drama to generate ideas and then wrote a letter back home to our loved ones as if we were a slave.

In maths, we have been applying all of fraction work over the past few weeks to reasoning questions.  We are really working hard to explain why an answer is either right or wrong.

Week Commencing 30/10/2017

Welcome Back!!  I hope you had a fabulous half term and are ready for all the exciting things we have to come in the weeks ahead!  Christmas will be here before we know it.

In literacy, we have been writing the build up and battle scenes to our myths and working hard to use higher level vocabulary.  We have also been working on exam technique when answering SPaG questions - highlighting the important word/words is VERY important.

We have been revising the different types of apostrophes.  Ask your child what the two types are - can they explain the difference?  Also, ask them why its/it's is a tricky one!

In maths, we have been multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000.  What is the rule?  Why do we not just add zeros?  We have also been learning how to find fractions of amounts.

In PE, we have been concentrating on team work and including everyone within a game.

In science, we have been exploring how fossils were formed and how we can use them to find out about how animals and plants have adapted over time.

Week Commencing 16/10/2017

I cannot believe it is the end of the first half term already!

A massive well done to everyone for a super harvest assembly - all classes did extremely well and enjoyed the celebrations!!

The children delivered their Trireme PowerPoint presentations about the effectiveness of Ancient Greek Warcraft.  They were absolutely fantastic!!

We enjoyed our Greek tasting morning.  The olives were a little like marmite - the children either loved or hated them! On the other hand, pitta bread and tzatziki was a major hit!  We will be making our own during the first week back.

In maths, we have been using the formal written method to multiply numbers and then applying this knowledge to solve worded problems.

In topic, we have loved researching information about Ancient Greek warfare and how the triremes were an effective resource for the Athenians. Ask you children to tell you some interesting facts about the trireme.

Week Commencing 2/10/17

We have had a great week exploring the Greek myth 'Theseus and the Minotaur'.  We have been predicting, clarifying, questioning and summarising to gain a greater understanding of the text.  In addition to this, we have designed our our mythical creature and used figurative language to describe it in great detail.

In maths, we have been working hard on problem solving and answering reasoning questions to deepen our understanding.

In literacy, we have been working on writing informal letters and using exciting synonyms and antonyms to engage the reader.  In maths, we have been reading and writing numbers up to 10 million, determining the value of digits, ordering and comparing larger numbers.

We have welcomed the younger children to our school and have taken our buddy duties very seriously, ensuring all new starters were happy and settled during their first week at school!

In art, we have been creating some fantastic paintings in the style of Hundertwasser - watch out next week for some pictures of the finished products!
