Welcome to Austria!

Miss Stones and Mrs Hague

Welcome to our exciting class page!  Here you'll be able to find out about all the work that we do in school and photographs of all the fun we've been having!

Welcome to year 6!  I hope everyone has had a fantastic summer and are ready to make some great memories! This term our main topic is ‘Ancient Greeks’. We will be learning all about the Gods and Goddess, leisure time and the many excellent myths.

Week Commencing 13/11/17

Thank you to everyone for your Children in Need contributions!

We have worked extremely hard this week writing recipes for friendship and acrostic poems - they brought a tear to my eye!

In maths we have been multiplying and dividing fractions.  Ask your child if they can remember the little rhyme to help with dividing!

We have also been learning all about Charles Darwin and all that he discovered.

Thank you to everyone for supporting with learning the lines for the production, we really do appreciate it!

Week Commencing 6/11/17

We have had a great week learning about the features of diary writing - using our empathy skills to write in character as King Midas.

In maths we have been adding fractions with the same and different denominators.  We have also added mixed numbers and fractions.  We must remember to put the answer in its simplest form.

Have a look at the pictures below - we really enjoyed baking pitta bread!

Week Commencing 30/10/2017

Welcome Back!!  I hope you had a fabulous half term and are ready for all the exciting things we have to come in the weeks ahead!  Christmas will be here before we know it.

In literacy, we have been writing the build up and battle scenes to our myths and working hard to use higher level vocabulary.  We have also been working on exam technique when answering SPaG questions - highlighting the important word/words is VERY important.

We have been revising the different types of apostrophes.  Ask your child what the two types are - can they explain the difference?  Also, ask them why its/it's is a tricky one!

In maths, we have been multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000.  What is the rule?  Why do we not just add zeros?  We have also been learning how to find fractions of amounts.

In PE, we have been concentrating on team work and including everyone within a game.

In science, we have been exploring how fossils were formed and how we can use them to find out about how animals and plants have adapted over time.

Week Commencing 16/10/2017

I cannot believe it is the end of the first half term already!

A massive well done to everyone for a super harvest assembly - all classes did extremely well and enjoyed the celebrations!!

The children delivered their Trireme PowerPoint presentations about the effectiveness of Ancient Greek Warcraft.  They were absolutely fantastic!!

We enjoyed our Greek tasting morning.  The olives were a little like marmite - the children either loved or hated them! On the other hand, pitta bread and tzatziki was a major hit!  We will be making our own during the first week back.

We have consolidated our grammar knowledge of all the things we have covered this half term and the children wrote some brilliant story openers.

Week Commencing 9/10/17

We have had a really enjoyable week!

In literacy, we have been planning our very own Greek myths and incorporating our writing targets into our work to ensure we get lots ticked off before the half term!  We have also been working hard to use the available resources to correct our spellings.

In SPaG, we have been using songs to help us remember some grammar facts.  Ask your children which song helps us to remember what the subjunctive mood is.

In maths, we have been using the formal written method to multiply numbers and then applying this knowledge to solve worded problems.

In topic, we have loved researching information about Ancient Greek warfare and how the triremes were an effective resource for the Athenians. Ask you children to tell you some interesting facts about the trireme.

Week Commencing 2/10/17

We have had a great week exploring the Greek myth 'Theseus and the Minotaur'.  We have been predicting, clarifying, questioning and summarising to gain a greater understanding of the text.  In addition to this, we have designed our our mythical creature and used figurative language to describe it in great detail.

In maths, we have been working hard on problem solving and answering reasoning questions to deepen our understanding.

In topic, we have been learning the differences between life in Athens and Sparta.  Ask your child how life was in the different city-states and which one they would prefer to live in and why.  We have been writing persuasive speeches and we also had a class debate!

In art, we have been decorating our Ancient Greek pottery - they look great!

We are working really hard in preparations for the harvest assembly!

Week Commencing 25/9/2017

We have had a very exciting and busy week!  As well as all of the learning, we have had House Team Day, Macmillan Coffee morning, House Captain elections and much more.

In literacy, we have been writing an ending to a Greek myth call 'Pandora'.  We have been trying to use exciting vocabulary to hook the reader in.  We used drama to generate ideas to convey the character's feelings to the reader.

In maths, we have been using the formal written method to add numbers and then applying the knowledge to reasoning questions.

Week Commencing 18/9/2017

What a fantastic time we had at Kingswood for our residential!  We had many, many laughs and enjoyed all the activities!  All children joined in and thrived in the exciting environment!  Please take a look below and see what we got up to.

Week Commencing 5/9/2017

I have been really impressed by the mature manner in which the children have started their year 6 journey!  We have had a busy first week but it has been fantastic to get to know everyone and I know it is going to be a great year!

In literacy, we have been working on writing informal letters and using exciting synonyms and antonyms to engage the reader.  In maths, we have been reading and writing numbers up to 10 million, determining the value of digits, ordering and comparing larger numbers.

We have welcomed the younger children to our school and have taken our buddy duties very seriously, ensuring all new starters were happy and settled during their first week at school!

In art, we have been creating some fantastic paintings in the style of Hundertwasser - watch out next week for some pictures of the finished products!
